Belgium Visa Insurance Requirements
Insurance requirements for Belgium international student visas
Like any student going to study in another country, applying for and obtaining visa insurance is an important
part of the preparation process. However, because there are a myriad of options for visas, you will need to look
at the Belgium visa insurance requirements and see what is available to you. According to the People's Health
Movement, more than 99 percent of the Belgian population is covered by compulsory health insurance. Determining
which plan of action best suits your specific needs can be an intimidating task, but we're here to help.
Prior to applying for a visa, remember you must be admitted to a university before proceeding.
European Union Students
- No visa required.
- You will need a national identity card and your European health insurance card as proof of insurance.
- Register with the local administration at your Belgian residence within eight days of arrival.
- As an EU student, you are probably already familiar with some of the health care guidelines, one being that
you are required to have coverage. Be sure to research universal health care coverage and private Belgium
insurance for international students prior to your visit.
Non-European Union Students
- First check with your home country to see if you can be covered for the duration of your stay. If you can't
be covered for the full amount of time, you will need to sign up with a sickness fund in Belgium.
- If you are traveling for more than 90 days, file for a student visa with the consular representation in your
country of origin or the Belgian diplomatic.
- Students from the P.R. China need to obtain an academic screening certificate issued by the Academic
Evaluation Centre in Beijing prior to higher education enrollment or other coursework, according to
MastersPortal.eu.
- Register with the local administration at your Belgian residence within eight days of arrival.
- If you are traveling for less than 90 days, you need to apply for the Schengen Visa, which also has
specific requirements. Belgium is one of 22 European Union countries that apply the provisions of the
Schengen Visa.
- After submitting your application for the Schengen Visa, it can take between 48 hours to eight weeks to
issue the visa
- The E111 and E128 forms are now invalid. Applying for a European health insurance card is mandatory.
Whether you are an EU student or Non-EU student, Belgium insurance for international students is required, so be
sure to secure your health care coverage before arrival.
