Health care in Brazil is a combination of public, state funded healthcare and private healthcare. Public healthcare is offered to both Brazilian natives and international students studying in Brazil through a national system called the Unified Health System, or SUS (Sistema Unico de Saude). The SUS is free for everyone. People who utilize this system pay nothing for doctors’ fees, lab fees, hospitalization, surgery, or prescription drugs.
However, public hospitals in Brazil are often not up to the standards that international students may expect. Common issues include overcrowding, staff and equipment shortages, and long waiting lists. For this reason, many of the more affluent Brazilians and foreign nationals, such as international students, take out private health insurance policies. Because of this, nearly three quarters of hospitals in Brazil are private, and it is estimated that about 20% of the Brazilian population is covered by private health insurance. If you choose this option, you will have shorter wait times and slightly better care. You may also choose to use coverage from back home, if your current insurance provider extends coverage to you during your travels.
The best hospitals in Brazil are located in the major cities, such as the Albert Einstein hospital and the Samaritan hospital in San Paulo, and the Samaritano hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Remember to check with your country’s travel health guide if you are planning on travelling to remote areas.
